AIDA Contributes to UHMS Freediving Medicine Session on Medical Clearance and Safety

Members of the AIDA International Medical and Science Committee participated in the latest session of the Undersea and Hyperbaric Medical Society (UHMS) Freediving Medicine Committee, contributing to the global conversation on medical safety in freediving.

The meeting focused on three key topics:

  • Medical clearance protocols for participation in freediving courses and competitions
  • Physician-issued medical certificates for freedivers
  • Identifying and understanding contraindications to freediving

This ongoing collaboration ensures that AIDA remains aligned with evolving international standards and promotes a consistent, evidence-based approach to athlete health and safety.

AIDA Approves Second Phase of Ultrasound Study on Gas Bubbles in Apnea Divers

AIDA International has officially approved the second phase of the scientific study titled Detection of Gas Bubbles in Bloodstream of Apnea Divers with Ultrasound.”

  • The first phase of the study was conducted in Dahab, Egypt in November 2024, and focused on the physiological effects of single deep dives
  • The second phase will expand the scope to investigate multiple dives under competition conditions, often referred to as the “safety regimen”

This next phase will be carried out during the AIDA Depth World Championship 2025 in Limassol, Cyprus.

By supporting independent research into freediving physiology and safety, AIDA continues its commitment to advancing athlete well-being and deepening the scientific understanding of the sport.
