Freediving Science and Medicine Conference in Dahab
This October, Dahab became the center of freediving research as experts from around the world gathered for the International Conference on Freediving Science and Medicine.
Chaired by Dr. Juan Valdivia Valdivia, the conference explored key topics to advance safety and knowledge in freediving, including:
✔️ Bridging science and practice for freediving safety.
✔️ Preventing decompression sickness in freediving.
✔️ Understanding and defining doping in the sport.
✔️ Standardizing safety protocols for both athletes and safety teams.
The conference showcased the importance of collaboration between research and practice, emphasizing AIDA’s ongoing commitment to the development of the sport.
Additionally, groundbreaking research on decompression sickness (DCS) in freediving was conducted alongside the conference. Scientists utilized ultrasound technology to detect nitrogen bubbles in divers’ bloodstreams and cardiac cavities, aiming to better understand and mitigate the risks associated with breath-hold diving.
New DCS App:
As part of this initiative, an innovative app has been developed to help freedivers assess their DCS risk. This app uses data and artificial intelligence to create personalized safety profiles for divers. You can support this project and contribute to ongoing research by downloading the app on Android. Proceeds will fund platform maintenance and the development of an iOS version.
