Safety plan:
The competition safety plan for the 4th Edition Cozumel Freediving Indoor Competition has been developed following the recommendations in the document: “AIDA Medical Recommendations for Organisers of Competitions”.
We are following the recommendations for our minimum equipment provisions from the Appendix document titled: “List of Recommended Medical Equipment, Expendables and Active Substances for Medical Support of Freediving Competitions”. Our medic will have a well stocked medical first aid kit, pulse oximeter, stethoscope, airways support, blood pressure monitor, oxygen tank (full, recently checked) with necessary breathing masks, we will have a stretcher, towels, cold water, shade, basic medicines, sunblock, insect repellant, rehydration sachets, multiple charged and working local cell phones and an ambulance/minivan for transportation.
In the event of medical incident that requires hospital admission we will transport the patient to an excellent hospital on Cozumel called CostaMed for further treatment. The transportation time from the pool to the hospital is 10-15 minutes depending on traffic. Our medic is a doctor of hyperbaric medicine with an in-depth knowledge of diving related medial incidents. Cozumel has a hyperbaric chamber (though we are a pool competition and not expecting any cases of DCS).
Our medic has been also provided with the document: “List of Recommended Medical Equipment, Expendables and Active Substances for Medical Support of Freediving Competitions”. We will check before the competition with the doctor to make sure he has all the necessary items. Cozumel is a developed island and we can easily buy most items we need, or bring them from Cancun/Playa del Carmen.
We are also following the recommendations in the document titled: “AIDA Check List Safety Set Up” - the Organiser and Main Judge will complete the document together several weeks before the competition begins to make sure everything in the Emergency Plan and Safety Plan has been accounted for. It will be sent to our competition medic also.
